  • Answer:

screw usually has coarse threads and doesn't have a nut....bolt usually has fine threads and goes into a nut......but the 2 terms r often used interchangeably

A bolt requires a nut to stay in place. It has a flat end. A screw tapers to a point and holds itself in place. I've heard of self tapping screws referred to as cut screws.

A 'cut' thread is a thread that is machined into the shaft of the fastener. You can tell it by looking at the unthreaded part of the fastener right under the head - The unthreaded part will be the same diameter as the top edge of the cut thread at it's largest. A 'rolled' thread is a thread that is pressed into the shaft. Under the head, the unthreaded part of the shaft will be approximately half way between the largest diameter of the thread and the smallest. WWWW______ cut thread WWWWW--------- rolled thread
