Help with 1996 Avenger?

Transmission Problem 1996 dodge avenger.?

  • I have a 1996 dodge avenger (2.5L auto trans) and i keep losing transmission fluid but there is no puddles in my drive way anywere. It started happening about 3 weeks after i had it serviced. ( just new fluid and a filter no flush). Its been happing for a long while now. It slips bad when its cold but when it gets warmed up it shifts fine. I useally rev it up to 3 grand and it kicks in to gear or i turn the car on and off and it will work agin. Any Ideas on what it could be or what to look for if i were to fix it myself?

Could possibly be the you have the wrong fluid in there lol. Those trannies(especially the a604) are real sensitive to what type of fluid you use. Also how many miles do you have? The a604 marked the beginning of the decline in chrysler auto transmissions. It was because of all the electronics, and the overdrive. My car's a413 is great because its like an old school torqueflite with no sensors whatsoever and only three gears. Its much stronger. If you have 80k-100k miles on the car, the trans could just be junk. Those are really bad transmissions. You may have to do a complete rebuild. You can buy a kit for that relatively cheaply on rock auto. Probably around $300 for the kit.

Clearly you have a problem with an oil bender. I suggest defeating the fire benders in your region and replacing the oil to a higher grade.

was it done at a quick lube garage then possible they didn't refill correctly can't tell you how many times we've seen this happen. just how much have you put into it so far? and would have to prove it happened just after you had the work done since if full now and its slipping then you have internal damage and need rebuilt. other problem could be with a bad radiator transmission gets cooled by a side cooler on it where the cooler lines from the transmission enter and exit if that cooler has rusted through then you have trans fluid mixing with anti freeze and that means damage done and rebuilt trans along with new radiator will see fluid in the expansion tank for the anti freeze and the trans fluid a strawberry color take it to trans shop for them to verify and go from there (no aamco)
