What's wrong with my snowmobile?

My snowmobile recoil rope keeps breaking. Whats the prob?

  • I have a 1997 ski-doo formula s 380 and the recoil rope keeps breaking. I pull it over and the rope comes flying out all frayed. This has happend to be about once every year and i have to put a new rope in it.

  • Answer:

Is there a rough edge where the rope feeds through this could be abrading the rope and causing it to wear prematurely, or Are you using high quality nylon cord? some rope just isn't as good quality and just won't last long.

Are you installing the recoil pull rope correctly? There must be something that the rope is rubbing against inside that is causing the rope to get cut. Check to see if you can find a "Exploded" view of the recoils starter and the parts that should be there. Maybe some type of a "sleeve", or "guard" is missing that should be there to protect the rope. I had a Mercury snowmobile for years and never had a recoil starter rope break. You may be able to find a repair manual on the Ski-Doo web site. These nylon ropes should last for years. Make sure you are using a genuine Ski-Doo replacement recoil starter rope. Good luck!

High quality re-coil rope can't be bought in hardware stores. Look in a sail boat shop for either no-stretch or pre-stretched line which isn't made of nylon rope. I'm surprised Ski-Doo doesn't have woven stainless steel re-coil cable line like Polaris sheds have had for 45 years.
