Is it expensive to maintain the turbo on a turbo car and is it worth having a turbo car?
-
I am wondering if turbo cars are worth having or its a waste of money? I am thinking of getting a Subary Legacy B4. I found a pretty cool turbo one but I am a bit worried it will cost heaps to repair if something goes wrong with it? Is it easy to maintain the turbo on a car and how expensive is it roughly? How often do I need to get it checked or serviced that kind of thing? and do turbos last long or do they break quite easily? I am really unsure whether to get a turbo or non turbo B4. I mean I am going to spend pretty much all my money on this car and I can't afford expensive repairs. Thanks for all the help.

Answer:
the turbo itself really has no maintenance. the oil is done with an oil change as it is the same fluid reservoir and the air filter is the same idea. after that not much to it.

If this is your daily driver and it is an aftermarket turbo I would not recommend the aftermarket turbo car. If it breaks you are looking at minimum a $300 fix. This includes just a bearing kit and labor. If it is a stock turbo and it goes sometimes you cannot find a stock turbo replacement and have to upgrade which means upgrading other parts to be able to handle it. In this boat you are looking at a minimum of $1,000 for the aftermarket turbo and then plus $$$ for all upgrades. Also sometimes it takes weeks to have a turbo repaired, now you are talking down time which you may have to rent a car or pay someone to drive you around. Hope this helps you make a educated decision
With a turbo the only advice I can offer is when you go to shut the engine down (turn off the car) you should allow it to idle momentarily to allow the turbo to wind down
Turbos are quite reliable now days just change the oil regularly Turbos spin up to 100000 rpm or more and need clean oil.
Pretty simple scenario. The answer is: You never spend ALL of your money on a car (or any transportation, or any woman). The fact that you're going to put it into what sounds like a blitzen b4 clone prior to the turbo legacy being introduced in the US means it's a backyard non-factory job. Get a cheaper car. If you can't, get a bus pass.
