How do I set the timing on my 97 eclipse 2.0 DOHC?
-
I changed the water pump on my 97 eclipse 2.0 DOHC and while i had the car apart I changed all the belts as well as the timing belt when I got the car put back together I was told the timing was off one tooth (a note: the car ran smooth before I replaced the water pump) The car ran before I tried to readjust the timing and now the timing is way off I cant even get the car to turn over now I was told there is a way to set the timing from taking off the valve cover and setting the timing by looking at the camshaft but Im not sure how to do that Is anyone know how to set the timing??? thanks for all who have looked and helped

Answer:
I wish you had more experience with this. When you remove the valve cover, you can see the cams and hopefully the timing marks on their gears. When you set cam timing you start with the crankshaft at top dead center for cylinder numebr one. It will come to top dead center another time other than for cylinder number one and that's wrong fo rsetting the cams. There's right, and then there's 180 degrees off. Make sure all the valves are closed on number one cylinder when you set the crankshaft to t.d.c.. Then you set the cam's timing marks to their correct orientation. Onetooth off may notun noticeably differently, but there are other missives to avoid- the distributor will not tell the truth unless the cams are right on the money- at least the cam that drives the distributor. Get some rest before you go at this again. It is precision work that takes a lot of care to get right. You do need the specs and clear directions for doing this job, like you will find in a Chilton's manual'

I am not positive but i think this engine is an interference engine. hopefully not or you will be pulling the head off and replacing valves. this warning is supplied with instructions on timing belt replacement. CAUTION: Do not rotate the camshaft or crankshaft after removing the timing belt, or valve components may be damaged. Always align timing marks before removing timing belt. If when you say the car wont turn over you mean it wont crank over then disregard below and pull the head off, because your pistons are hitting your valves if it does crank use extreme caution when turning the crank or cams remove the valve cover and the front cover exposing the timing belt. remove the timing belt. and pull out your spark plugs. now rotate your crankshaft around with a ratchet until your number one piston is just below top dead center in the cylinder. verify by looking in the cylinder via spark plug hole. that none of your pistons are all the way at the top of the cylinder. now you rotate your camshafts so that both valves are closed on #1 cylinder. there are also timing marks on both cam gears that should face eachother. now turn the crank slowly until the timing mark lines up on the engine block. re-install belt then turn the engine over by hand 2 revolutions. (if at any time it feels hard to turn do not force it because something is wrong). all your marks should line back up. if they do then you are in time. good luck.
