Check engine light 1997 grand am?

1997 Pontiac Grand AM GT check engine light?

  • I replaced the spark plugs and when I cranked 'er up I got a check engine light. I tried the whole take off the negative terminal for 10 minutes thing, but no help. Is there any other way to reset the check engine light?

  • Answer:

There's usually a code you put in with a combination of ignition turns, and gas pedal pushes. It should be in your manual. (Eg. ignition to acc. mode, hit gas 3 times, turn ignition off, turn car on. That's not the code, but it'll be something like that)

Maybe one of the plugs isn't firing, that will def. give you a sensor fault...and engine light. Did you gap them right? Are they the right temp plug? You sure the wires are on tight? Edit: Well, the engine would sound about the same with 5 cyl firing, so no it wouldn't be apparent Lolly ; )
