What are the basic health concerns about mold and mildew?

How to stop automotive interior vinyl mold?

  • I have a 1975 Datsun car in storage (northern Michigan region) that has the strangest problem of developing a dusty gray mold on the steering wheel black vinyl outer ring as well as the horn. The car is in a cement floor insulated garage and is covered with cloth blankets. The humidity levels in the garage in my opinion are not bad and the roof is in good shape with no leaks. A few other surfaces of the car interior like the door skins, vinyl seat backs and the vinyl head liner have started to develop dusty mold indications. I had in the past cleaned all these interior surfaces with a cloth soaked in half water and half bleach. Everything cleaned off but after a few months the mold grew back. The steering wheel being the worst as it looked fuzzy with the gray mold. I have since cleaned the interior again with a stronger mold and mildew remover. Questions – What can I do to permanently stop this mold problem? Could this mold present a health hazard? Should I keep the windows down and leave the car uncovered in storage? Thanks

  • Answer:

I had a similar problem with leather seats and upholstery and I stoppped covering them with the flanel cloth I was using. It definitely slowed the mold down. I think you have too much moisture too, that was my problem too. So I put a dehumidifier in the garage and no more mold. Here's an info page on how to deal with the mold. http://www.truck-and-car-floor-mats.com/car-mold.html
