Why does my "check gages" light keep coming on? It started with a coolant leak which I filled.?

It blows cold air and the temperature gage goes way up. Help me PLEASE???? 1998 Buick Skylark

Answer:
You're still low on coolant. It won't circulate through the heater core if it's too low. If there's no obvious leak, but it still loses coolant fast, you could be looking at a blown head gasket. A shop can check that quick by looking for exhaust gas in the cooling system.

The "check gauges" light does not just refer to your coolant temperature, it also monitors engine oil pressure, battery voltage. You need to actually look at the gauges and figure out which monitored system is at fault. 1. Coolant temp - should be around 200 - 210 degrees normally. 2. Battery voltage - Should be around 14.0 to 14.5 volts running with no loads (a/c, lights, defroster) 3. Oil pressure - Cold your oil pressure will be around 40 to 50psi, as the engine warms up and oil get hotter, it thins out and pressure will drop to a normal operating level of about 12 to 14psi at idle, lower oil pressure will cause the gauges light to come on at about 0 to 5psi. If you added coolant and have no leaks and no heat, chances are the coolant was added to fast to the system allowing an air pocket in the cooling system. A Buick Skylark usually has a 3.1 engine. At the upper radiator hose on the engine side where the thermostat housing is, there is a little bleeder screw (7mm), open the bleeder screw to allow the trapped air to escape, eventually, you will start seeing coolant come out of the little hole in the bleeder, tighten the bleeder screw. This allows you to remove any air trapped in the system. Now, check the coolant level and add as needed. If you still have no heat, chances are when you drove your overheating car with no coolant, the thermostat locked in a closed position not letting the coolant circulate through the engine. Be careful and diligent, i might add, Check your oil. I had a truck and it said "Check Gages " Unfortunately, I had already seized the motor.
Filling a car with cooling isn't going to fix a leak, which it probably has. I think it's time to head off to a local reputable mechanic before a small problem becomes bigger and costlier one. That's my advice to you.
Sounds like water pump or thermostat. If your coolant leaked then you have a leak. Your car loses very little coolant over a very long period of time. You replace coolant, not add it. You need to have someone take a look at your car before you break it. Do not drive it while the temp gauge is at or near red. That is very important. If you have to, have it towed, it will cost you less that way.
