What is the best hair dryer under $50?

Why does a gas engine start much easier if I heat up the engine with a hair dryer?

  • I have a gas mower and trimmer. My Ryobi trimmer refused to start this morning. The temperature was about 65 degrees. I checked the spark plug and gap - all good. Check the air filter - good. Made sure the fuel line was ok. The trimmer is used weekly and usually has a hard time starting. Today it wouldn't start after 50 or so pulls. It wasn't until I took a hair dryer and heated up the cylinder and carb that it turned in a single pull. My mower has also behaved like this. Is this just a cold engine behavior? Is it recommended to help start an engine like this?

  • Answer:

Cool idea, never thought of it. Stands to reason though. Heat & expansion. Taking a dryer to the jug would heat up the rings enough to close the gap & give it enough compression to start. As far as gonna hurt the engine? heck no, heat generated from the engine while running vs. hair dryer is like a tornado vs. a summer shower.

actually your the first of i know to do this, maybe its time to tune the chokes.

a lot of engines have chokes for that but it's probably because your heating up the cylinder causing it to expand making the piston easier to stroke easier for the motor to turn over and thus start

I usually just use a squirt of ether the first time I start the power equipment up after the winter....maybe I'll try your hair dryer technique.
