Check engine light blinking and car's shaking when its on N or just after i put in R or D?

I have toyota avalon 97. Recently Check engine light is blinking for few min and then become solid. After day or two light doesnt come on or just off itself. Also whn light is on my car start shaking before speed up. Whn light is of my car does not shake anymore. I want to know whts causing it so whn i go to mechanic they would not rip me off . Thank you

Answer:
The check engine blinks only when damage to engine or catalytic converter can occur. #1 cause misfire this would explain the shaking also.
