Car transmission only can use low gear, how long can i drive before repairing?
-
this is basically whats going on, i have a 95 ford escort, since its my FIRST car , im still getting used to checking fluids and so on. i didn't check the transmission fuel and then one day i started smelling something burning and i can could only go in LOW gear. i crawled to the ford dealership and they told me that my transmission was bone dry , i used 4 ( things ) of transmission fluid to fill it up............. this is what i CAN do : i can do reverse , i can use park , i can use low gear ....CANNOT start in drive , BUT i CAN start in low then switch to drive after i hit 20 mph then hit any speed i want etc..........so i think my gears are working....because i read that when the car thinks ( or knows ) something is wrong with the transmission it limits you to use only low gear until you get to repair place...............................(SO HERES THE PROBLEM !!!!) i get money in 3 weeks ( college student ) , so im wondering if i can keep doing my trick ( switching from low to drive at 20 mph ) and not mess up transmission any futhure?

A small piece of advice: If you can borrow money from a friend (for 3 weeks - till you get your money) and get your car fixed now, you probably ought to do that. I'm no expert in car-related issues, but I once drove my '98 Honda Accord under similar circumstances. At first, when the automatic transmission was having trouble shifting gears, I managed to drag it along like you are doing now. Then a few days later, I found myself on the freeway with my car almost stalled (the automatic transmission was stuck in a low gear and couldn't shift up). I drove 5 miles on the shoulder with my blinkers on and somehow got home. The next day I took it to the repair shop. They told me that I had caused so much damage to my car, that the whole transmission system had to be replaced. I even got a second opinion from a well-reputed Honda dealer, and they told me the same thing. If I had got my car repaired when it first started having problems, it could have been fixed for a few hundred dollars. After all the damage was done, the cost to replace the engine was a couple thousand dollars (and that's when Honda actually absorbed the cost of the engine itself, and just charged me for labor). Look... maybe mine was a totally unique and extreme situation, and your situation may have nothing in common with mine. However, my point is just the longer you keep driving your car when your transmission is having a problem, the more damage you are likely to cause. Maybe if you can manage for 3 weeks without using your car, it might be fine. Otherwise, the sooner you get it fixed, the better. Good Luck!

since you were driving with no fluid in the trans, it will probably need to be rebuilt

If it is still moving after you run it without fluid, that means you haven't burnt it al the way up , so to answer your question about if it will make it three more weeks i believe it will as long as you keep fluid in it and don't drive it to hard before you are able to shift it to drive.

Well it sounds like it is already pretty screwed so to be honest, drive it and it probably wont break as long as the fluid remains OK, but its really hard to say. On a 95 I dont think it has anything to do with computer control limiting because it needs repair, it is truly screwed, they onyl recently started intoducing features like that.

instead of saving that cash for your current transmission look to save cash for a whole NEW transmission. ... and always keep and eye on your fluids man! always always always.. your car is LIFE AND DEATH...(what if you run outta break fluid??) but you probably don't have much longer, walk if you can ,drive only when you have to.
