How do tire pressure monitors work ?
-
Our 2007 model car has magic tire valves that display a light on the dash when a tire is underinflated. How do they work ? I presume a low-power radio of some kind. Since the current pressure may be locked-in as a setpoint with a button on the dash, I presume that each sensor sends a value for pressure, rather than just an over/under status. I figured that meant that the car actually knows which tire is low, but only tells me that one of them is, which is annoying.

Answer:
Magic is for fools. Your tire pressure monitoring system uses electronic sensors inside each wheel and tire assembly to measure tire pressure in real-time and provide a warning if one or more tires drops below a specified threshold. And yes it works by transmitting the information by radio.

that can be done one of two ways. one way is the computer watches the individual rpms at every wheel and compares the inputs there. if one tires is spinning at a higher rpm, then its radius is smaller and pressure is lower. another way is an actual sensor that is inside the rim on the valve stem. it reads actual pressure and sends a signal to the computer.
