Car engine change/engine swap, need help to know what kind of engine do i have?

  • I own a 1999 Mercury Cougar; I am looking to change the engine or engine swap. I’d like to know 2 things before going into this. 1 what kind of engine is in my car. I know I have Duratec 2.5L V6 24 Valve DOHC manual transmission under the hood. But when I was on car-parts.com I saw there was 2.5L (VIN L, 8th digit, DOHC), eng tag 9G-400 & 9G-401 series 2.5L (VIN L, 8th digit, DOHC), eng tag 9G-828 & 9G-829 series 2.5L (VIN L, 8th digit, DOHC), eng tag 8G-400 & 8G-401 series How do I know what type of engine beside the basic information I already have and where do I look. Can I pull it up from the vin number off the car Second is there any website that would be able to calculate the total cost. I know for a fact the labor is 15.5hr at $80.

    you are way off , that car has a 3.0 liter engine. either a vulcan or duramax 24V. just tell the guys you want the same motor put in and get an estimate , they arent going to try to put the wrong motor in , the motor is easier to replace if you have the right one. get 3 or 4 estimates and go with who you feel comfortable with. i have a 99 taurus

There data plates under the hood. They give you the type size of your engine. The VIN will also give you the size and type engine. Now for the cost of a engine depend on several things. Short block or with head and intake. A short block is cheaper. Bull cost more in labor to have the head and intake removed from the old block and the mechanic shop work needed to proper do the job. To get a ball part price. Go around to shoppes in your area and see what their cost will be for the engine and to install it. Get this number in writing and it be good for 30 days. The engine are all the same, It the computer and equipment added on to them 9G-828 and 829 are automatic transmission. The 8G is low out put. And the 9G is high output. This is manger prom in the computer. And the type of injection system set up low or high output.
