Clutch problem causing engine vibration?
-
Hi guys, apologies if this fault has been covered in a previous post, I did search as many clutch related problems as I could, but didn’t find any that covered the exact symptoms I am currently experiencing. I have a 2003 156 Sportwagon 1.9JTD, I noticed about a week ago that the clutch pedal didn’t feel as smooth when pressed as previously, and almost felt gritty/creaky when pressed and depressed causing juddering between gear changes, also the biting point of the clutch is a lot lower than it was, I now have to push the clutch right to the floor to change gear. It still has pressure when pressed, and returns to the correct position fine. The problem I have is with 1st gear and occasionally 2nd. I’m finding that if I lift the clutch and press the accelerator as normal from a stationary position, the engine vibrates quite aggressively, until a press the clutch down again, however I’ve found that if I lift the clutch very slowly, and press the accelerator a little more than I normally would, I can get her going vibration free, the same occurs if I’m in 2nd gear and the cars not moving as fast as she’d like, vibration again, 3rd, 4th & 5th gear are all fine, it’s just stopping and starting that’s the issue. The problem also occurs when reversing, at normal biting point aggressive vibrating,, but if I very slowly lift the clutch and over accelerate, it reverses okay. If anyone has any idea what it is that’s causing this, or what parts I need to replace I’d be most appreciative, I’ve checked fluid levels so can rule out any fluid loss. I have a basic mechanical knowledge having done a few jobs on my Alfa in the past, so I was hoping to purchase and attempt a fix myself to keep costs down, Thanks guys, Martin.

Answer:
The likely causes of that is worn gearbox mountings, or engine mountings, get them checked over, they wear and split causing your symptoms, the worse scenario is the clutch unit itself, and the very costly Dual Mass Flywheel if your car has one fitted

brake/clutch fluid should be renewed every 2 years as it is hygroscopic. Perform a complete purge of the clutch circuit. (if you are feeling adventurous, you really should do the brake fluid too). Hygroscopy is the ability of a substance to attract and hold water molecules from the surrounding environment. All your problems are connected to the low biting point.

Hi It sounds like an issue with the clutch pressure plate, possibly a broken finger. Very best regards Geordie
