Once a car catches on fire, what is its worth?

  • my car 94 chevy cavalier caught on fire because of a battery explosion. the alternator overcharged the battery, causing it to explode. i know it burned some wires, not sure what condition the hoses, belts or motor are in. the car was already in a low condition (worth $400-$500 in my opinion). i need to know what is the best way i can get my money's worth out of this piece of junk, (selling it for parts or selling the car as a whole). what do you suggest? as i only bought the car from a previous owner for $600 with a 160k miles on a v6 3.1 motor and with an automatic tranny.

    Parts are almost always worth more then the car. However, then you have to deal with lots more people, take parts off, put adds on eBay, Craigslist, etc., maybe ship parts, etc. And finally you would still need to find metal salvage yard to buy the shell that is left. (they often make you remove the engine, gas tank, and wheels) Make a list: Starter $30 Alternator $30 Radiator $50 Rims $10 each Engine $200 Tranny $150 doors $50 each fender $60 bumper $50 windshield $50 etc. The other limitation is that you need to have it in a garage or something so that you don't create an eyesore for the neighbors, who can get you in trouble for running a junk yard.

if its had insurance look at it.it could be a wright off so only £100.00 but if not would go on ebay for £2-300 if you sell it local from £50-250 at its best. if i was you i would sell it whole seems like you may get some money back but its if the right person is in the right place at the right time sorry to hear the bad news

Presently, it's essentially worth what it weighs in scrap metal. Unless you consider your time and effort in trying to part it out as worthless, you're best bet is to simply scrap it for the salvage value.

if you do not want to part it out, i would take it to a salvage yard and sell it for scrap
