How to get your car battery charged if you havent used it in a while?

  • i havent drove my car in a long time and the battery isnt to old but i jumped it and drove it for like 15 minutes and as soon as i turned it off it was completely dead again, so im just wondering if there is anything that i can do like how long should i drive it or leave it charging for longer or if i have to just get a new battery.

    Go to a parts store and they'll check the battery and alternator for you at no charge.Auto Zone or Advance Auto will do it at least.Just call around and find out if those stores aren't nearby.

Try a looong half-amp charge, and check the battery water If that doesnt do it then YES the battery is dead

if you leave a battery sit too long it can sulfate. in other words all the acid goes to the bottom. i had that happen before and had to get a new battery.

can buy a battery charger cheap can remove battery and take to a shop have then charge it over nite 15 minutes not enough time really maybe a couple hours if it was dead any shop or parts store can check charging system most do it free only take a minute

as bo said you may have a dead cell in the battery or your alternator may be zonked out or you may have a wire loose check in your yellow pages for an AutoZone, Pep Boys etc - call first and ask if the do a free battery/charging system check do not be surprised if you need to replace both sometimes you replace the battery - and the old alternator cannot keep up and fries itself all the best
