What is the difference between a standby battery and a deep cycle battery?

Is there a difference between a car battery and a caravan battery?

  • I have a motor home with an auxilliary battery under the front seat. It is charged by the engine battery when the vehicle is running and is used to power the internal electrics such as lighting and fridge, without draining the engine battery. The present auxilliary battery is not holding its charge for very long and I was wondering if I have to buy a specific battery for a caravan or can I use an ordinary car battery as the auxilliary?

  • Answer:

An ordinary auto battery can be used, however one designed for caravan or boat auxiliary use is designed to perform better in extended discharge / recharge situations as experienced in recreational usage. It will hold up better when recharged less frequently.

Car batteries are designed to provide a LOT of power for a short period of time. So the plates have more surface area, but less depth. Marine batteries are designed to provide less power for a longer period of time. So, they're thicker. If your RV has a marine battery and you install a car battery, it won't perform as well. It may also overheat and have shorter life. RV electrics draw power for longer periods of time, so I suspect the inside battery is a marine style

all 12 volt batteries are pretty much the same with the exception of cold cranking amps you can use a car battery.
