How can I get better gas mileage for my car?

  • As the owner of a 1976 Mercury Grand Marquis, gas can be pretty expensive. Is there any way I can increase the miles per gallon my car gets?

  • Answer:

The air cleaner is crucial for a carbureted car, it acts like choke when dirty. Speaking of chokes, make sure it opens all the way when the engine is hot. Obviously a tune up would be good.. If you can do it yourself, all new plugs and wires will make some difference. But it would be hard to pay off the labor charge with gas savings. Over advertised plugs and wires will not help a bit. Spec parts are fine, and not overpriced.

Clean all the extra junk out from the interior, coast over the tops of hills and up to stop signs. Drive with a light foot, never go more than 1/3 throttle unless you have/want to.
