Can you get the Hydra-Matic Six-Speed Automatic Transmission on the 5.3L?

Is it worth it to get a transmission flush for my car?

  • I know that when maintaining a car under 80,000 miles it is important to flush your transmission every 45,000 miles. I also know that when your car has a high mileage and has been having transmission problems, it could harm your car to replace transmission fluid and the transmission filter. So, I got my car, 97 Toyota Avalon, at 160,000 miles and i am not really sure if the transmission was maintained before i got it. Now at 197,000 miles my tranny is beginning to slip and when it switches gears, it is punching pretty hard. Should I waste the money on trying to flush my car or should I begin shopping for another car.... My budget is pretty low. And I know with all the problems that this car has given me, it isn't worth replacing my entire transmission.

  • Answer:

I always work on my own car.. So I really don't scimp..Yes..I would change the fluid and filer and the gasket..just to see what might be laying at the bottom of the TRANS-Pan.. Its quite easy..if you don't need to drop a torsion bar or a chassis support..a steering arm or what ever might be located..so take a look first-- You need to loosen alot of bolts..dropping one corner..so the oil goes into a pan/ Tightening(reverse)is important..you may need a torque wrench/ [end]

nope dont flush it, the tranny is gonna give up in a few months or in my case a year and a half

Take it to an aamco or other tranny shop. Have them road test it and drop the pan to determine if flushing it is advisable or not. If you're really cheap, you could try some of the snake oil they sell at the auto parts store.

bein workin on trans for over 20yrs. drop the pan an try a filter kit.If that does nothin try car-part.com you can find anything for your car or truck there. I use it eveyday for my job. You can pick your price you can aford. Remember the unit number when you call the junkyard.Good luck.
