Wheel size on a ford explorer?

What is the thread size of the tip of a front wheel axle on a 2003 ford explorer?

  • I have to change the front left abs sensor on my 2003 ford explorer limited (v8 awd) but in order to do that I need to clean the thread because it is full of rust. If not I have to buy a new axle. I'm going to buy a die to clean the thread but I need the correct size. Does anyone know what size the thread is? If its metric or standard size? I posted a link with a picture so you can see exactly what I need. Thanks. http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h264/achitownlegend/thread.jpg

  • Answer:

I do not know what the thread size of this particular hole is but when you remove the old sensor, you should be able to determine the size by measuring/comparing it to a tap/die. Another option that works well is to make a slice in the threads of the old sensor 90 degrees to the direction of the threads (make it appear like a self tapping screw) with a hacksaw. Doing this will create a rough edge that will clean out the threads. Re-install and remove the old sensor a few times. Then the threads in the hole will be nice and clean for the new sensor. Hope this helps
