What is wrong with my gas gauge going up and down?

What's going on with my gas gauge?

  • I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty Sport with 113,000 miles on it. I just recently bought it and noticed that the gas gauge is going crazy! Sometimes it will read full when it's not even full and other times when it is full it will read about half. Sometimes it seemed to read the exact that is in there but majority of the time its not accurate. I was told to try a fuel injector cleaner so i did just that and it still seems to not be right. Can someone please tell me what might be going on?

Sounds like you need a new fuel level sensor. The float and sensor are located inside the tank, and are usually part of the fuel pump assembly on newer cars. I recommend taking it to a mechanic for a diagnostic check and a quote for a new sensor.

Fuel injector cleaner, won't help an indication problem. Sound like your fuel quantity sending unit in the tank is going bad.

Your sensor is sticking or faulty, it is located in the fuel tank and has a float and lever that plugs into the sensor. It works on resistance instead of a hot wire in the tank. As the float moves the lever up and down it increases and decreases the resistance in the ground wire making the needle move on the dash. If you want to know how to replace or inspect it e-mail me.
