Does anybody know anything about poker dealers?

Anybody out there know anything about 95 dodge caravan automatic transmitions? Maby a simple problem/fix?

  • I just bought a used 95 dodge caravan "automatic transmition" a few weeks ago. It has had a problem going into reverse scence I got it. If it is cold and you shift into reverse it acts like its in neutrel, just reving rpm's. After a few seconds "depending on how cold" it clunks into reverse really hard! It would break gears if I did it cold verry much! Warm, it acts totally normal and works great! It also had a slow trans fluid leak so I put a bottle of trans stop leak in it! After a few days, it started slipping from a stop going into drive! No hard clunk like reverse, just slipping for a sec or 2! The auto trans also delays shifting gears! It revs for to long before shifting to the next gear! There is also a viboration after takeing off for a few seonds, then totally smoothe! So I went to a trans shop! They said to have the trans fluid/filter changed, so I did! This helped the trans feel "smoother! " Smoother with the same issues! When cold not going into reverse without delay and big clunk, slipping from stop to moveing in drive with a viberation for a few seconds and late trans shift between gears! The leak seems to have eather slowed way down, or stoped! The shop now said $1000 to fix and replace whole trans!, I dont believe that is in need because trans works great/smothe after in gear "no grinding or jumping out!" This is a trans enguageing problem, not gear problen! I think because its a auto trans, maby the trans speed cencer? I found a 2nd fuse /relay box under the hood! The trans relay/fuse were gone! I thought I had found the problem! After makeing a few calls, I found out that fuse/relay box is universal between differant makes/modles! The dealers/shops say the fuse/relay PROBLY doesent apply on my modle/make! They just wanted me to bring it in to them to see for sure! Nobody would tell me anything over the phone! The internet said possibly a trans speed cencer! I see it is real simple to get to and change! Right next to the trans dip stick! It actually rubbed the coteing off the wire agenst the dip stick and grounded and blew the ignition fuse! I electrical taped and fixed that problem! The only reason I seen it was because I was checking the fluid levle and seen a jumping spark! Is that cencer totally bad? maby grouending out/went bad before I got the van! Im not a dodge mechanic, but I know enough that I dont think this is a big problem! Hopefully not big enough to have to replace the whole trans! HELP ME! What controls the auto trans and tells it to enguage in gear/shift from 1 gear to the next? And what is that vibration for a few seconds takeing off? Auto trans, got to be a relay/cencer/fuse or something right? I see on the intent this is a common problem with the dodge caravan! I just cant find the sulution/answer anywhere! Somebody out there knows exactly whats going on! Please help me out! I am 29 and got a 4 year old son and a wife to take care of with only 1 vehical! I dont got much money! Im not sure it takes much to fix this problem, but Im not a dodge expert! Somebody throw me some good advice/answers that are acurate so I can fix this problem, PLEASE!

  • Answer:

I would have told you to have the filter and ATF replaced but... now that you've put stop leak in it you might as well plan on putting a rebuilt transmission in it. Nice move.

I can't answer your question, but I might give you some information that might help a little. Your vehicle has an A604 ( also called 41TE) trans-axle , and is electronically controlled. Because your vehicle is 1995 I don't think codes can be retrieved from the computer with an OBD2 reader, but they may be with an OBD1. You might check that out. There is a way to retrieve codes with the ignition key if it will work on your vehicle. Go to the following site and it will explain the procedure and has a list of trouble codes. http://www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html Another site that might help you out is: http://www.allpar.com/fix/trans.html I hope some of this helps. ...Good Luck... PS There is a write up on how to purge the fluid so that you can get most all of the old fluid out at the last web site I gave you.

you might start out by changing the fluid and filter.

It's likely that transmission will need a rebuild. The longer you drive it in that condition, the more likely it will need addtional parts and labor. It's unlikely any sort of electrical issue would cause reverse to fail in a 95 Caravan. Take it to 3 transmission shops and get their opinions. Don't go to a general mechanic shop. A good general mechanic shop will just subcontract the rebuild to another transmission shop. A bad general mechanic shop will try to rebuild it themselves. If the shop that did the filter and fluid said it would fix the problem, that would be dishonest. Fluid and filter changes are preventative maintenace, they will almost never fix anything. Once the damage is done, it's too late. Transmissions don't need rebuild only when there are "gear problems". There are parts in the transmission that have a limited life. They are meant to be replaced during a rebuild. When reverse fails in a 1990's vehicle, it's almost always internal failure.

Took longer to read your "question " than it would to rebuild your trans, which is what you need. If it made it to 15 years without a rebuild then you are lucky. Actually you are not ( you just bought it). Time for a rebuild dude , No way around it. You should already know this about chrysler. 86 and up had trans issues. Actually they all did, but the biggest problem was people not putting the correct fluid in.Most dodge products went to a type 4 or 5 trans fluid and when you add dexron type fluid you screw up the trans. Look on the dipstick and see what type fluid to use. Yes it is 2-3 times the price, but $10 is less than 2k to rebuild a trans on a $1000 van

Wow that is a long question. that sensor that shorted out probably should be replaced because they don't like to be shorted like that and usually don't work correctly after wards. Unfortunately Dodge transmissions suck and if the transmission shop says it needs rebuilt it probably does. Now for your other questions. There is a transmission fluid pump that moves the fluid throughout the entire system. This pump has to work perfectly to make the vehicle move and shift properly. If that pump is bad or weak there is nothing you can do to fix it without rebuilding the transmission although there are some additives that can help it last for a while longer. These can be purchased at a local auto parts store. Now for the symptoms you listed I would guess that this pump is beginning to go bad and you might get lucky and have an additive work. All of the shift sensors work by reading the pressure of the fluid at different points and different speeds to shift into the proper gears and if they are bad it will not shift right. Another thing to consider is that since you say the transmission works good after it is warm the fluid could be too thick and not flowing as it should until it is warm. I know that you have had the fluid changed but was the correct fluid used? That vehicle requires the atf+4 which is a synthetic fluid and has special properties that make it crucial to the transmission performance. Good luck with this and I hope I have been helpful.
