How bad is it not to charge the battery fully?

How long does it take for a battery to fully charge a car?

  • I installed a new battery in my car yesterday and it worked. The car cranked and I successfully made a 30 minute drive home. However, the voltage only every made it up to 9 and the battery light never went out. Is this normal? Does it take a while for the car to be fully charged by a new battery?

  • Answer:

Your battery isnt the problem, sounds like your charging system that is used to recharge the battery is the failed component, depending on the make and year, replace the alternator.

The Battery is not the problem, it sounds like it is the alternator or voltage regulator. Most alternators have internal voltage regulators, therefore you have to replace the alternator. I would suggest you take it to a parts store and have them test the charging system. They will let you know if there is a problem with the battery or alternator. Advance auto or Autozone does this as a free service.

Seems the alternator has failed. A new battery would have gone up to 14 volts if the alternator was good. Don't let your new battery get dead. It's bad for it. Hook up a charger to it, while you figure out how a new alternator can be installed.
