Should I get a transmission flush?
-
Hi, I own a 2004 Oldsmobile Alero. A couple of years ago, (about 30,000 miles ago) we did a transmission flush and replaced the filter. Recently, the car has been having problems shifting, especially the first time it runs in a day. It will reach 4, 5, sometimes 6 rpms before it will shift. So I took it in for an oil change, knowing they would fill the transmission fluid and possibly see something wrong with it. The shop told me that my right front axel seal is leaking, and they recommended a transmission flush and filter replacement. I noticed that the car has not had the shifting problems in these last couple of days that followed the oil change. Should I pay to get the transmission flush and the seal replaced? If so, how much should I be charged? The shop told me that a transmission flush would be $225, and the seal replacement $200. Am I being overcharged?

Answer:
you should clean or replace the transmission filter every 10,000 miles slipping slow shift is usually due to low fluid remember to always check fluid level just a little low can cause problems or damage . your axel seal should be replaced ,but in no way does it have anything and i mean anything to do with your transmission nothing!!! you really dont need your trans. flushed doesnt hurtanything about 20.00 should cover cost of flush 35.00to60.00 should cover cost axel seal. your not being over charged your being taken to cleaners without soap water or towel, must be dry cleaners ha,ha, ha.check prices out on car repairs via your computer please. or if you like giving money away. contact me i would be happy to help you liten your load.

The reason you are having these problems is excessive wear and tear due to low ATF which is low due to your axle seal leaking. Flushing it won't help the issue but it would get all the metal shavings out of there. That actually is a reasonable price for the services and repairs and if you arent going to get the transmission problem fixed, then there's no point in replacing the seal or flushing it besides to prevent it from getting worse
trans flush will not fix a fault
