How do you do an air reverse?

In what direction should air flow go through my radiator, standard or reverse?

  • I have a 53 chevy with a newer motor (straight six 250 from a 68 nova) and and my radiator (2row original 53) keeps over flowing when i stop driving it. I have changed the water pump, took out thermostat bought a new flex fan. The old fan i flipped around (i thought it was backwards) and worked good didn't boil over figured putting a new fan would be better. I installed it the way it said and now its boiling over again. should i flip it over (reverse)? what difference dose it make? any other suggestions? thanks!

  • Answer:

the difference is that the an blows on the motor one way and blows away from it the other way

If the radiator is 56 years old, chances are it's plugged. Is the coolant at 50/50? If the fan blows air out, then at a certain speed, the air forcing its way back through the radiator will create a condition of very little air flow. When the fan blows toward the engine, the airflow when driving isn't fighting against the fan. It works with it.

The fan should be blowing from the front of the car towards the engine. otherwise you would be blowing hot air from the engine compartment through the radiator.
