What should be done for general car maintenance?

Car is just over 100K miles... what maintenance/services should I have done?

  • It is a 99 Olds Intrique... owners manual says to have transmission fluid and filter changes, air filter replaced, oil change/filter change, and maybe having cooling system drained/flushed, and refilled..... Anything else I should have my garage do???? I need this car to last a while!

  • Answer:

The frequency of what needs to be changed varies greatly with the type of driving you do. Air filters usually last longer than the recommended change unless you use dirt roads, then you will go through lots of them. City driving is hardest on oils and I would change at least every 5K if that is all you do. Conversely if you do all highway driving and especially if you invest in synthetic you can go much further. I drive highway and sold my 92 Mercury Sable 4 years ago with 368,400 miles. I changed the oil/filter every 15K with synthetic and it is still being driven by another owner and does not burn oil.
