What are the components of a car battery?

Can i flip a car battery to its side?

  • ok so take this in, i got a new car battery because unfortunately the old one does not work. Anyhoos the new battery i got the +ve nd -ve terminals are on the side rather like the old on they were ontop, the wires of the car to connect are too short to reach the side nd it is difficult to turn the screws when theyre on the side, my question is can i flip the car battery to its side so that the terminals are now on the top? will it have any effect on the acid inside the battery? so for example flipping a "Z" to its side makes an "N", like that the Z is the battery. the terminals are on the side on the Z m flipping it to an N so that they are on the top, get it? lol. K and another bit off topic question is it ok if the battery terminals touch any other components next to it? THANK YOU! 6 STAR TO EVERYONE WHO ANSWERS!

  • Answer:

You got the wrong battery. Take that battery back and get the proper battery for YOUR car. Simple as that. ^

They sell battery terminal adapters eg http://crimpsupply.com/battery-terminals-copper-lugs/side-terminal-to-top-post-terminal-adapter-negative.html for like $5 a pair at your local parts store.

Battery terminals should NOT touch any part of the car. as you might cause a short circuit across the terminals, which could cause a fire. Old style batteries were not sealed, i.e. not watertight, so that if turned on side the acid could leak out ; new ones are generally sealed and do not require topping up, and so in theory should not leak - however I think it would be unsafe to turn it on it's side, as it would depend on the level of acid inside to keep the plates covered.

NO! Someone has slipped you a battery with the incorrect terminal positioning for your particular car. The electrolyte will leak all over heck and the battery will be worthless if you flop it on its side! The acid from the battery will rust the dog meat from all steel and aluminum parts in its path!

NO! There is liquid acid in the battery. The battery also have vents to let gases escape. If you flip the battery on it's side there is a good chance some, or all , of the acid will spill out. Return the new battery and get the proper battery.

No you can't. There is a vent on top, to allow for the gasses to escape. It will leak acid.
