What is a reconstructed title for a car, and what does it mean?

What does it mean for me to have a car title in my name?

  • Im 18 and I have a car that is in my mom's name, but she wants me to switch the car title to my name now that i am 18. what exactly does this mean for me? do i have any responsibilites with it in my name? also, will i need to get my own insurance plan? thank you in advance!

  • Answer:

As long as you are living in the same household and are a family member you can stay on moms insurance if she let's you. As far as the car title goes... putting it in your name means that you will be the legal owner of the car... right now your mom is. That means that the car would then show up as an asset belonging to you should any creditors do a search. And you are responsible for keeping the registration current. * transferring title is not a big deal but it does usually cost some$. Even if you haven't actually sold the car to another person its as if you have (it has a new owner) and most states require taxes to be paid on the value of the car. Look into what your states policy is on car title transfer.... hope that helps!
