How Many points can you have on your CA license?

How many points will I have on my California Driver's License?

  • I got into an accident in Colorado. It was a single vehicle and I was driving my friend's car because he has a suspended license. I hit a patch of black ice, spun a few times, and landed on my tires in a ditch (everyone is good). The highway patrol came out, got my friend's insurance car but I got a ticket. It says that on the ticket it will be 3 points, but is that Colorado points? How will that cross over to my California license?

  • Answer:

Roger is wrong. Each state has their own system if accessing points for traffic violations and accidents. You can see California's system if you look on Page 70 of your California Driver Handbook. An "at fault" accident using California's system is accessed 1 (one) point. Only the most serious offenses are accessed 2 (two) points.

Other answers

there is no such thing as "colorado points" a ticket anywhere is a ticket. did the officer ticket you for driving too fast for conditions? or failing to maintain control of the vehicle? in any case it counts as a ticket for insurance pourposes, and is on your california license.
