How do I get my pyrotechnics license?

How can I get an international drivers license or SA license without a passport?

  • Hi, I'm an English guy who lost his passport. I reported it to the police today and will be contacting the embassy tomorrow (by the way - does anyone know of the British Embassy in Adelaide or who to contact??) to get a new passport. I have a job starting soon which requires me to get a license here which I've heard I can't do until I get a new passport. I NEED to have a driver's license in 2 weeks if possible. Does anyone know of any way at all that I can get a driver's license either international or SA just using my UK license? If not does anyone know roughly how long it will take to get a passport and then license? Also, it wants proof of address, utility bills, etc. I live in a hostel at the moment and obviously don't get any bills, so will a receipt from the hostel suffice or not? Any help is very much appreciated, i desperately need this job and therefore a license. Thanks!

Eek! As far as international driving permits go- in Australia we can only provide international permits for Australians wishing to drive overseas. Unfortunately they don't work the other way around. In order to get an international permit to drive in Australia, you would actually need one to be sent over from the UK (as far as I am aware, but I do process plenty of IDPs for Aussie residents.) If IDPs in the UK are anything like they are here, all you should need to get one is a passport sized photo and a picture of the front and back of your UK driver's licence. Have you got any family or friends back home who can look into this for you? Also, as far as I am aware, you do not necessarily need to have an International Drivers Permit if you are an Australian driving in the UK. Although it is 'recommended' it is not 'required.' Similarly I would expect that you would not necessarily require an IDP if you were a UK resident driving in Australia. If you wanted to take out a South Australian drivers licence? That's a whole different kettle of fish, and definitely not within my field of expertise. I imagine that you would need to prove residency, and that you would need a certain amount of 'points of identification' - your UK driver's licence is a great start, but you would definitely need proof of address, and some other paperwork like a bank statement, credit card, etc. To prove that you live at the hostel it might be more beneficial to actually have a signed statutory declaration rather than just a signed note. What you can use to prove your ID- you need 100 points all up: http://www.ocba.sa.gov.au/licensing/cardsystem/100points.html Info for British consulate in Adelaide: http://ukinaustralia.fco.gov.uk/en/about-us/other-locations/adelaide unfortunately, it looks like they are unable to help with passport matters, but they should be able to put you on the right track. Looks like the passports are all processed in Wellington, NZ- but here is some info on how to apply for one from Australia: http://ukinnewzealand.fco.gov.uk/en/help-for-british-nationals/passports/how-to-apply/australia
