How to transfer car title?

How can I get around car title Transfer issues?

  • My godmother recently gave me her old car as a gift. I did the necessary paperwork with the DMV and got the car registered in my name and got insurance for the car in my name. I signed the forms to get the title transferred over to me and this is where the trouble begins…. The DMV told me a few weeks later that I won’t be able to get the title transferred over to me because my god mother owes $1,000 on the car because of a returned check a few years ago. So basically if my god mother can’t pay the $1,000 I’m screwed. I’ve shelled out a few hundreds of my own getting the car inspected/fixed etc. I don’t want all of my money to go to waste. Is there anyway I can’t get around this title snafu?

Your godmother means well but she is not giving you a car if she owes money on the car. If she owes money and this is a legitimate complaint against her, she owes the money fair and square. If there is a dispute, there needs to be record of the dispute and this is the only thing that would make a snafu. You are not screwed. You can always contact your state representative and get an explanation on who owes what and why. Your elected official may not know the answer but he or she could take you to the department that can help you. Here you may be able to see if there is a mistake. Investigate by talking to the stakeholders. Talk to your god mother, the people at car registration and also your insurance. If the car has plates, can you drive the car and get your own insurance on it. Do your best, do it honest, see who owes the money and make an educated decision based upon getting more information.
