New changes practical car driving test?

Do you need need to be on the insurance policy of the car you are driving for the DMV Driver Test?

  • I am 15, 15 1/2 in November, and soon I will be getting my permit. Later, my California Drivers License. Now during the drivers test at the DMV I will be using my grandmother's car since my mom's is a standard and I don't think I'll drive it that well under the pressure of the test. Now obviously I won't be driving my grandmother's car on a regular basis; it's a one-time thing because I will later receive my mom's current car when she gets a new one. I know I need to show proof of insurance before I take my drivers test and my grandmother's car is insured but my name isn't on the insurance. Will this prevent me from taking the test? It makes no sense for me to be added to the insurance policy of a car I won't drive, so is there a way around this? Can I show proof of my insurance on my mom's car instead?

  • Answer:

It depends on the policy and the state laws. I believe most policies cover guest drivers at least for the liability coverage. This is the coverage for any other drivers damage in the case of a collision.
