Texas Vehicle Registration - Moved to New County?
-
I recently moved from Dallas to San Antonio and when it came time to have my yearly inspection I headed down to the closest garage. Based on my registration sticker (good through Oct. 2010), the mechanic told me my car was registered in Dallas, vehicles in Texas are registered by county, not statewide and I would need to head down to a local office and have it changed. I assumed he wouldn't do the inspection until my registration was changed, but he did it anyway and gave me a piece of paper titled "Out of State Indentification Certificate" along with my 2010 sticker. My car now has both the registration sticker and inspection sticker good for another year. My question is, do I really need to go pay $ to have my registration changed now that I live in a different city/county? Especially if I'm likely to move again? I don't see anything on the DMV site addressing what the mechanic was telling me other than a change address form (which I've already done). My other car's registration/inspection is coming due and I was sent the renewal from my previous tax assessor in Dallas. Should I pay that and just get the new sticker from Dallas? I assume no police officer would be able to tell "where" my registration sticker was from without pulling me over for another infraction and as long as it's up to date and I should be fine?

Answer:
the registration of an automobile is done at the state level, not by county. however your new county may put a property tax on your car over and above what the state does for a registration tax.
