Getting my drivers license in Michigan?

Can I be a temporary resident of another state for drivers license and insurance reasons?

  • I will be living and working in Connecticut for the next six months. I am going to return to Michigan at that time permanently. Do I need to change my drivers license and insurance address to CT? My birthday isn't for eight months, so it won't expire until then. It is just an expense that I don't need as I am barely getting by with my income.

    Answerer Nad _ is wrong and although she has apparently gotten away with this (so far) she is illegal. Unless you are a full time college student attending school out of state and paying non resident tuition, Legally, You may have only one address. There is no such thing as a "temporary resident". There are short term visitors, there are long term visitors but not "temporary residents." You should, however notify your insurance company that you will be in Ct. for 6 months to make sure that they will cover you in the event of a claim.

Different states have different rules. Several states say that if you are living and earning an income inside their state, then you have to change your car plates and drivers license. Others are not so strict. You're a lot closer to the source of the answers than I am. I suggest you contact the state of Connecticut and ask them.

If you will be keeping your address in Michigan, then you do not need to change your license over. I have had the same address in VA since 2003 (parents house). I have lived in NJ for over a year, KY for 2 months, LA for a month, worked in NY state for a month. As long as your mailing address is valid you do not have to switch over your license or plates. If you aren't keeping the same address, you could find someone in your home state that will let you use their address and then just go to the DMV and do a change of address.
