When getting a New York State Restricted Drivers License, Do I Have To Retake My Road Test?

• I was told today that due to the penalty of operating a vehicle without insurance, my license will be suspended by Albany of New York State. I explained I operate a vehicle for work purposes, and would need a restricted license. After gathering tons of information, I forgot to ask if I would need to retake my road test. I had spoken to a family member, who told me, if it's just a suspension I can pay $85 for the restricted license, however if it's revoked I may have to retake my road test. This was not explained to me at the DMV so I was curious if anyone had any information for me, I looked online through the DMVs website as well as google and found no promising results, maybe someone has experience with this, all information is greatly appreciated.   When your license is revoked, you no longer have a license, so yes, you have to go through the entire procedure from written to road test. When your license is suspended or restricted, however, you still have a license. What you need is permission to use it again without restrictions. A word about restrictions. Make sure that you only use the vehicle as allowed and make sure all your travel information is included in the restrictions and that you promptly report any changes (i.e., change of address) so the restrictions can be modified. I've known people with restricted licenses who have been arrested for being in a mall parking lot; on the "wrong" highway (doesn't lead directly between home and work); or in a neighborhood away from their registered home or work.
