When should I get my car title back?

Can you get your car back after signing over the title under certain circumstances?

• Help! My best friend has made a terrible mistake. Due to an ugly breakup, her ex will not give back her car. Back-story: A friend of hers took out a home equity loan to buy a house, spent a portion of it to buy my best friend a car, and put the title in her name. She pays her friend back an agreed monthly amount. About two years ago she lost her license due to a DUI. So basically, she could not register the car in her name because she needed insurance first, but she couldn’t get insurance because she needed her license. About a year ago she met and fell in love with her (now) ex. She decided to move to California to be with her. In order to get her car to California, she signed the title over to her (now) ex for a dollar. It’s a lose-lose situation. If she stops making payments, the car won’t be repossessed because it’s paid in full and she would totally screw over her friends that gave the loan. If she continues the payments, her ex will basically get the car for a dollar. Does she have a strong case for small claims court? Does she need a lawyer? Are there any other options? She’s tried so hard to be civil with her ex, but she is crazy!
