Do you need car insurance to drive with a permit?

Do I need car insurance with my drivers permit? I'm 17 and doing have my license yet but I have my permit. I don't know what the law is for Wisconsin. Am I covered as long as the owner of the vehicle is in passenger seat?

Answer:
No you do not. You legally can not be added to an insurance policy unless you are a licensed driver. As long as you have a licensed and insured driver in the car with you, they are the ones covered. The flip side of that is if you get a ticket or crash, that licensed and insured driver is the one who actually gets the ticket or crash put on there record.

That would depend on the terms of the owner's insurance. You wouldn't be responsible for having it, as long as you had permission from the owner to drive.
