Car contract question?
-
I recently went to a dealership and found a car I really liked. The salesman was very nice and was able to get the price down to 18k, which is what I can afford. However, we didn't have our checkbook with us so we could not make a payment and did not have the proper insurance. Therefore we never paid anything and never took the car. When we went to sign the papers the weasel finance guy somehow snuck a $3000 extended warranty past us. We noticed this right after we walked out of the building (right at close) and caught the salesman on his way out to tell him what had happened. I also emailed the manager and mentioned the same thing. Now we have not paid anything nor do we have the car, so technically we do not have a contract YET. They should be able to allow us to resign the papers at the price quoted correct?

Answer:
Hmmm. Since you signed the contract, you may have a problem. If you haven't already, ask to speak with the head honcho, not just the sales manager or some other minor flunky but the top dog. Complain to him. If that doesn't work, go immediately to your States office of consumer protection and file a complaint. Then liberally advertise what happened in your neighborhood, your county, your city, your state. There is nothing like a lot of bad publicity about a dealer to make them see the light. If the dealer agrees to let you off of the hook......... DO NOT reward them buy buying a car from them. Teach them a lesson. Teach them that they cannot get away with shady dealings. BTW. There is no "cooling off period"or 3 day waiting period for a car. Good luck. Caveat Emptor !

Check out the "cooling off period" for the contract. I used to sell cars and I'm sure you gave him permission to add this to your invoice when he asked you something on the lines of, "In your opinion do you feel having a safe ride that will last you longer with no repair costs will give you peace of mind?" After answering yes; though shady, you implied that you wanted an extended warranty. You did not notice this until checking the contract after signed and out the door, but I would check the cooling off period which is stated in the contract itself is usually 3-10 days in which you can cancel. Upon canceling, renegotiate to 17 to 17.5 for your troubles or take your business elsewhere. Make sure he doesn't throw in the floor mats for an extra $500 though.
