Can an uninsured driver drive another person's car?

New licensed driver, can I drive my father's car without being on his policy?

  • Hi! I just received my license last Wednesday, and I'm 20 years old. My father lives in SC and over the summer, my boyfriend and I borrowed a car from him to drive home back to CT. My father is the primary driver, my boyfriend is listed as the secondary. As stated, I'm a newly licensed driver now and am not anyone's policy yet, as my mother wants me on my father's, and my father wants me on my mother's. However, because my father doesn't live in my household and it's his car, am I allowed to drive it without being on a policy if his car IS insured? Or do I need to be added to his policy before I can ever drive it for it to be considered legal? I'm just asking because what good is having your license if I can't even drive the damn car xD, and I prefer to do things lawfully without getting in trouble.

  • Answer:

There are lots of situations you aren't aware of on the road. You will want to be insured on the cars you drive. Ask each parent who wants to get a new car so you can get theirs! XD

As long as you have insurance, whether it's through your mom's or your dad's then you can drive legally drive any car that is insured.

Except for an emergency (such as driving your father to the hospital) YOU must be covered under some insurance policy.

don't be naughty. you must be on his policy.

If you're a dependant on his tax returns you are legally allowed to drive the car under his coverage.
