Commercial Drivers License test?

Do I have to take a written test if switching a CDL drivers license from another state to California?

  • I am considering moving back to CA from Washington and have a valid WA Commercial drivers license (CDL). from what I can gather CA has no drivers license reciprocity with other states and seems to require new residents to completely re-certify to switch over a drivers license to California by taking all written tests over, and also does not recognize the Federal DOT medical card and requires recertification of a physical as well to get the CA med cert. Is this all true? In other words, why can't I just surrender my out of state drivers licence pay a fee and be issued a CA license like every other state?

  • Answer:

It is true; the land of fruits & nuts just has to be different from everyone else. The CDL system was intended to make qualifications for commercial drivers universal and took effect in 1992. But, I had the same problem when I moved out of California, the other states made me take both the written test and the road test again. Also, you will need another DOT physical; but since you have to get one every two years and anytime you change companies it isn't a big deal. Most truck companies pay for the physical. If you are remaining employed at the same employer after your move, ask your HR department or safety person about that.

My advice, move to CA, leave your license in WA. get a P.O. Box and have a friend forward important letters to you. I would reimburse your friend for any troubles. This is more than likely illegal, so don't get caught. If you do decide to become a full blooded Californian, you will need to take all the tests all over again, including the drive portion, if I recall correctly.

Its true, we dont trust out of state drivers. You will have to take the test.

Other than the warmer weather, I can't see any good reason to move to California anyway. Most people who can afford to get away are leaving California. Unless you really enjoy paying one of the highest income taxes in the country, I'd stay far away from the land of fruits and nuts.
