Can I legally drive my fiances mothers car; will her insurance cover me?

Can I allow my friend to drive my car while I"m in the car? Will my insurance cover him/her?

  • If I'm taking a 400 mile driving trip in my car and I get tired and allow my friend to drive my car, will my insurance cover him? The car is registered under my dads name. My insurance card is also under my dads name. I'm under my dads car insurance policy. I'm not a minor I'm an adult. If I let my friend drive my car if I get tired and the cops pull him over for speeding or a moving voilation will the cops impound my car? What if my friend gets my car involved in an accident? Can his car insurance cover the accident?

  • Answer:

Whenever a cop stops you, they always ask for license, registration and proof of insurance. The registration and insurance info should be in the glove compartment, so able to access. Even though the registration and insurance will show the name of your father, most likely you would need to show your drivers license to validate that you have the last name, since I am guessing you are a male. As for insurance, most "likely" they would cover your friend if he was driving and you as a passenger if in an accident, since that would be considered "permissive" use, due to driving a 400 mile trip and to alleviate tiredness of both of your driving. good luck

good question just to make sure I would call your dads insurance agent and ask him a question It would seem if your friend is a licensed driver there should be normal run of the mill policy.

If he gets a ticket then he has to pay for it. If he gets in an accident then it won't cover him

The insurance may very well cover him in case of an accident. What they usually don't cover is people who arent listed on the policy but live in the same house as the person who IS listed on the policy. As for getting a ticket or your car getting impounded, you have absolutely nothing to worry about there. Nothing illegal about that. Anyone can drive a car with insurance in anyone's name, its just a matter of coverage in an accident.

As long as your car has insurance he won't get any tickets for it even if its under your dads name. But if he gets in an accident your dad either has to have him under your insurance or have a policy where it covers who ever drives it which I doubt you have hardly anyone does. Maybe you can talk to the insurance and just add him for the few days he might be driving it.

There is no "one size fits all" answer. Insurance Company rules vary, state rules vary. Simply ask your insurance company. Then you will know for certain.

Is it not clear to you that this question or questions need to be asked to the insurance company that holds the policy of this car? What we think or opine or past experiences anyone here might have had do not matter one cent. What matters are the terms under which this automobile policy was issued to the owner of that car, your father. He owns the car. He insures the car. Somehow, as an adult, you cannnot afford to have your own vehicle. So, super nice and loving dad is providing one for you. Respect this super effort that your father is doing for you. OK? Speak with him about your plans and your concerns and that you wish to share driving duties with a traveling companion. He need to know if the coverage allows for someone outside of his house hold by either reading the policy or just calling his insurance agent or company. It is his car, it is his insurance, you are his relative. Ask him. Best wishes.
