How Old do I have to be in Indiana to get a job as a car salesman?

  • I live in Indiana and I work as a cook right now making little over minimum wage. I would like to get a better paying job. I am going to be going to college the fall of 2011 and I'm 17 right now. Is getting a job as a car salesman a good idea to try for or are there other good high school jobs to look at?

  • Answer:

You need to be 18. But dealers are very selective now & want experienced sales folk with yrs on the job. At age 18 you have nothing that I would want if I were a dealer. Plus in order to make a good living at it, you have to do it full time. When unemployment is as bad as it is, employers can now be very selective. There are better folks out there. At your age, I would do the military. I know many people will think it's a bad idea, but in truth military folks are respected. Plus you can get the military to pay for that schooling. Then later on when you put on your resume' what experience you have, you can say that you have real world experience.

I think you do need to be 18, but once you turn 18 you should sell cars, you'll get good sales experience and make more money than flipping burgers.
