Buying a van/car privately. Do I have any rights?
-
I bought a van yesterday so I can start Plumbing for myself. It's a small Astra van (06 plate) which has done 69k. Decent all round condition and I payed £2200 for it. I've just noticed it's leaking oil pretty badly, just waiting for the garage to have a look at it. I'm pretty gutted because I spent nearly every penny I have saved working in a crappy summer job on it. The man I bought it from sells quite a few vans but I don't think hes a trader. I've also asked the garage if they will give it a once over for me so I can find out if it has any more problems (Knowing my luck the van will be knackerd and it needs loads of work doing to it). I should have took someone more mechaniclly minded with me to look at it because TBH I dont have much idea on cars/vans. If it is £$%£ed, am I entitled to ask for any sort of refund or anything? Whats the best thing to do? Or do I just have to think 'It's mine now and I have to sort it myself' in response he said; "It was fine when you drove it away. We have checked on our drive for oil and there isnt any there. There is nothing we can do!" Sorry for the long post and cheers for any replies.

Answer:
why were you in such a big hurry to buy this? you had all the time in the world BEFORE you put your hard earned money down. Had you taken it to a mechanic before you could use the report to negotiate on the price or pass on a pile of crap. Taking a used car to the mechanic after you boy it leaves you holding the bill. you have the right to go to an attorney BEFORE YOU BOUGHT THIS how come it did not happen? this is on you and no one else, no disrespect intended but next time stop and think and have a mechanic in he picture first.

You had the right right at the beginning NOT to buy the van. Instead of hiring out a mechanically minded individual, you took the gamble of saving some money and doing it yourself dumb as turd and hoping for the best. Now you know EBay is an auction site. You bought it sight unseen. You are lucky you even got a car. Some take the money and run.(and you would have a photograph of the car and no money.) It has happened. WHENEVER you go out to buy something, you must know something about it. Or you deserve to be broke. Life is like that. It is yours. Leaking oil does not mean a heck of a lot mechanically. At least there is oil IN the engine. Maybe the guy was just a sloppy oil changer, or the oil filter leaked and dripped a drop an hour which fell on the motor. Not a major problem. Re-tighten the oil filter and the drip stops. It only takes a dozen drops plus dirt roads to make it look like heck underneath. It is yours to keep or do with as you wish...Hey maybe list it on "EBay".for say 2800. You drove it away. That is a good sign the engine is not hooped. Private sale is exactly with that warranty . Once we got the money - we don't know you,so piss off.
It's as-is, no warranty. An oil leak usually isn't a big problem. It could be the gasket around the oil pan or maybe a valve seal. See what the mechanic says first.
