Should I buy a car with an open title?

Name on car title when two people buy car?

  • My adult daughter and I are purchasing a car together and paying for it in full(no financing) I will pay two thirds and she will pay one third of the total costs.I will be doing all of the driving because my daughter does not drive.I was told that if my daughter is listed on the title with me and I am involved in a wreck that she could be sued, so I think it would be wise to leave her off of the title. My question is-even if two people buy a car can you put only one person as owner on the title?

  • Answer:

I would say put your daughter's name on the title, and buy third-party insurance that covers you. This way, your insurance premium should be lower (young female? safe driver?), while you still get coverage in case of an accident

Cant you just say you are buying it yourself ? Assuming you carry insurance, she shouldn't be at risk anymore than you are. Another way to add two people to the title without making one of them liable insurance wise is to put that person down as "lienholder".Lienholders are not liable for anything the driver/listed owner does or doesnt do.
