What do I need to do to sell my car privately?
-
I've never sold a car privately before so would appreciate some advice. I am going to register it with an online car sales site but wonder what should I do to get the best value from it? Is it worth getting a vehicle safety inspection/ detail clean etc or does the buyer do that? Also I have sussed out it's true worth is about $14,000 so how much higher should I actually list the vehicle, knowing people will bargain me down? What needs to be done and who should I contact re signing over the ownership and registration? Any advice specific to Queensland, Australia would be most helpful. Thanks

Answer:
You should make the car as presentable as possible. So presentable YOU would consider keeping it. Being you are in Queensland, I'm in Texas, means I can't help with papers. Just general presentation and sale. When you ARE ready to advertise? Keep the car away from visible public. You do not want tire kickers nor thieves seeing the Ad. Then know where to find it easy. Use only the phone as contact info on Ad. Allow local inspection. Only if you set appointment and are there. Preferably have someone with you. Keep papers in house. Until ready to sign. DO NOT ALLOW a "test drive." unless you are in car. Or, the person with you is. Never take too long with the nit pick type and down talkers. They only want the car for re-sale. We here call them low-ballers. Do not act in a rush. Nor be rushed. The one who really wants it will ask questions. Not pick the car apart. Have any maintenance receipts/records? All good sale promoters. Your best sale personal tactic? Poker face. Never let the potential buyer even think "you must sell." That's blood in the water to low ballers. Good Luck

Pity you don't give details on make, year etc, but be weary on how you come up with your valuation! Being queensland, you will need to have a roadworthy inspection done, once passed this lasts for 4 weeks, but once passed, should be easy to renew if the car is slow in selling. Don't neglect this, and sell as is where is, it can cause huge and expensive complications, and lose you plenty of $ on your sale price. Check local papers, gumtree, ebay, etc, for an idea of what other cars of your make, year, and Km's travelled are selling for, check only private prices, don't look at car yard prices, they can be twice as high as private, if this is were you have got your $14,000 valuation, you are in for a big disappointment! Also ignore internet valuations, such as redbook, car sales. com etc, they are generalisations and way short of true sales valuations. If identical cars, ( as near as possable.) are advertised for $14000 privately, then realistically, you could expect to get between $10 and $12000, if advertised for $17 or $18,000, then expect 12 to $14000. I would advertise it this way: Make, Model, Year, Bought new, ( If you did.) books and service receipts, ( If you have them.) Km's travelled., lady owner. Photos are Essential, put in as many as you are allowed, cleanliness is also essential, for this price, a full detail is required, once done, the car should be used only for test drives. (if possable.) also keep children and pets out of the car! Roadworthy supplied, $14,000, not open to offers, Fixed price! And as you live in Queensland, add, NO flood damage. I recently bought a car off gumtree, it was a specialist vehicle with only a limited number built, selling privately for over $7000, and increasing in value yearly. And was advertised this way. Ford, BA, some accident damage, (repairable.) registered, No roadworthy, as is, were is. (1 photo!) $5500 or near offer, ring for inspection.(No mention that it was limited production, and had low km's) I spotted immediately that it was a limited production vehicle, had some minor damage to a door and guard, after ringing many times, the owner could only make the car available for inspection after work, (in the dark.) or on a Sunday. I bided my time, and after 6 weeks, and 2 price drops, now down to $4000. I rang again, inspected the car, and, after discovering that the lady had paid $19000 for the car 4 years before, the low km's were genuine, and after a test drive, my feeling was it would only need brake pads for a roadworthy, I offered $2700, she tried to push the price up, but when I told her I would pay cash and take the car immediately, she gave in. I then spent less than $1000 on the car to repair the damage and get a roadworthy, and now have a car increasing in value, rather than decreasing. Sooo. Know you have the value of the car right, and stick with it,( if your not getting answers, your price is too high!) Keep the car spotless, Roadworthy is a must! make the car available 24/7 for inspection! (within reason.) keep all books and receipts handy, Keep the car registered, allow approved, (RACQ etc.) inspections to be done, or better still, have one done yourself, and let buyers see it. And don't expect it to sell immediatly, at this price, most people are going to need finance, make sure they have this in place before you allow a test drive. Make sure you get thier details on the vehicle transfer before you let the car go, and write them a reciept, highlighting that the vehicle is sold, as is, were is, with no warranty supplied or intended. Good luck, enjoy the proccess, and watch for trickery.
Register the car online, post large clear photos of your (clean) car. The buyer will deciede if he/she wants to spend money out of their pocket to have it inspected not you. Give as much information as you can, year, make, model, odometer, options, condition, maintenance, work done, etc. You can post the price you are willing to sell it for and say firm, or post a price (say $14,800) and say obo (or best offer) which means you will consider offers. You need your proof of ownership registration papers, bring that to the insurance office with your buyer to fill out forms (Canada), then your done. The owner of the car (you) and the buyer will have to be there to sign the papers and make payments, easy process.
