Do I need a cosigner to buy a car?

Student loans to buy a car?

  • I am about to attend Austin Community College for Culinary Arts, and my parents refuse to help me out financially with school even though they make enough money. I work right now and have saved up for a moped but my dad is sending it back because he does not want me driving on it. Well, since I leave in July to college, I will need a car. But it is getting hard to get by because people take me to work and I give them gas money. I get paid 7.25. I will have about 1,200 in my pocket once I return my moped but I really want a car. Lets say I take out about $12,000 in loans for school, use the 5,000 for my two years at ACC, can I use the rest to buy a car? I mean...is it possible? Which loans should I apply for? I have a cosigner already.

  • Answer:

Sure, it possible, but probably not sensible at this point. Do you realize how much insurance along will cost? Several hundred a month. Then you have gas, general maintenance and repairs. Making 7 bucks an hour will not come close to covering it. Sorry. But good luck at ACC, it's a good school.

Only suggestion, I could make is go to one of those "in-house finance" places. They'll usually work with you. I bought my first car from a place like that.
