96 Toyota Corolla with 227,000 miles for $1500...what do you think?
-
My hubby and I recently went to look at a '96 Toyota Corolla that has 227,000 miles on it and they're asking $1500 for it, which is about our limit on spending at the moment. He needs a good dependable car basically just to get him back and forth to work, but we're a little worried about the high mileage. The reviews on this particular car make/model seem to be really good and I just wondered if the general public has had experience with buying a used car with this kind of mileage.

Answer:
toyota is known for having cars that can take the mileage. Have a mechanic check it out but the mileage isnt that much of a worry to me if the car is in good shape to prove it was well taken care of.

Please stay away from anything with over 150k. It doesn't matter what reputation a car has, what it comes down to is how the previous owner(s) treated the vehicle. If proper maintenance wasn't kept up with and it's been through a lot, you're going to go through a lot as well, if not more. $1,500 for any car with over 180k is just insane. I don't care if it's a Lambo. I wouldn't pay anymore than $500 for it. Check the carfax report if you don't want to loose your money and then more money that you'll be pouring into fixing it when it breaks down in a week. Save yourself the huge headache. Do NOT listen to KBB on this one.
Try to get all the service records you can from seller. Search the VIN, Vehicle ID NUmber online w/ about 3 services similar to Carfar which has had reliability probs. [Ask the seller for the VIN] Try to get it to a T dealer for a pre-purchase inspection. Or maybe you can get a mobile mechanic to come to your location. ============= Dont buy anything w/o reading Consumer Reports, CR. http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/index.htm A non-profit testing organization.
