MPG for jeep wrangler. Is their a way to improve it!?
-
Yes, I understand that because of it's brick-like shape and materials it's made out of, that it has to push harder. But there's gotta be a way to be able to drive an awesome vehicle like a jeep wrangler and still not have to constantly fill up at the pump. I'm thinking about getting one, but which one should I really get...4cyl hardtop or 6cyl hard top??? After many reviews reading about the 4cyl, I read that the 05/06 models can get as high as 25MPG on the highway with the 6spd manual. But I've also read that the 4cyl models are underpowered when it comes to highway speeds past 65MPH and trying to pass even a car on the highway is a struggle. Even with non 4X4 tires, no lift, no custom suspension, high grade oil and fluids, brand new spark plugs and tune up, good fuel, and keeping a stead speed on the pedal...it STILL does not get no more then 25MPG. And since the 4cyl SE models do not come with Cruise Control..it makes it harder. As for the 6CYL, I read, and even have been personally told that it does not struggle on highway speeds, has more power and has been strongly recommended over the 4cyl model. But even with everything I just stated earlier (Tune up, steady speed, no modifications,etc...) still does not improve gas mileage and only gets around 22MPG with cruise control on. (That's if the model even has cruise control) I've also had the thought of adding a 2.6 cummins diesel engine for better performance and fuel efficiency since i've seen it done before, but that would cost way too much. I understand that If I want fuel efficiency and power, that I should just get a midsize sedan or something like that. So don't tell me something I already know. What is the best way to get better gas mileage out of it? I've also read that adding an Airaid (Not K&N, etc..) air intake system will boost up the HP and fuel efficiency about 15/20 % more. But i'm still stuck between thinking if they're a waste of money or not.

Don't waste your money. That is the nature of the beast. As for the diesel idea, you won't have a road legal Jeep if you have emissions...odds are your area will have it one day if it does not now.
You buy a Jeep for it's ability to handle any and all on and off road challenges. It is a 4WD vehicle. It doesn't get good gas mileage and the numbers you're reading about are probably the inflated, Government MPG ratings ....which bear no relation to reality. It's your choice. I have a '00 Cherokee with the old inline 6 (4.0L) and the best I can do in combined driving is 17MPG.
Fuel economy is 95% driver, 5% car. If you want to get better mileage don't throw parts at it, change your driving style and habits. I did and saw an immediate 5 mpg gain.
You have it pretty much covered, Jeeps don't get good gas mileage.
