  • I'm trying to buy a car, but the owner of the car has lost the title. How would I go about getting a new title for it?

    You cant. Only the registered owner can. They have to fill out of form, pay a fee and wait 3-6 weeks. You need to be very careful. First make sure the car isn't stolen or have a lien. Then check into how long you can get a temporary tag for. (My state is 10 days but they will sell you several, you just have to go back every 10 days) Finally, insist on withholding part of the price until he hands you the signed over title. At least $100 and preferably more. Realize that if the owner never gets a title, you wont either. If he wont let you hold onto $100-200 until he gets the title, DONT DO IT ! ---- In my state, the owner going with you to the DMV wont help you. He has to go, but the title will come back to him in the mail and until you get that, you dont need to fully pay for it. In other words, he has to go, but you going with him wont help anything. You have to wait for it to come to him in the mail and then, assuming there is no lien, he can sign it over to you. If he isnt willing to do this, he probably pawned the title and you will never get a title.

its easy take the owner to the DMV, IF ITS A GOOD DEAL BUY IT YOU CAN CHANGE OWNERSHIP AT THAT TIME, AS LONG AS THE REGISTERED OWNER IS THERE, BUT MAKE SURE THERE IS NO LIEN HOLDER NO MONEY CHANGES HANDS UNTIL THE DMV SAYS THE CAR IS CLEAR TITLE. THIS IS A COMMON TYPE SCAM, CLAIM THE TITLE IS LOST, (BECAUSE THE LEINHOLDER IS LOOKING FOR THE CAR TO REPO ) THEN SELL IT FOR WHATEVER, AND OWNER NEVER PRODUCES TITLE BE CAREFUL HERE IF THE OWNER REFUSES TO GO TO DMV WALK AWAY
