There is no fail proof way to buy a good used car. Your best bet is to buy it from a reputable company who provides a warranty. If you are buying a late model car, it can be more difficult. I always ask for a carfax if from a dealer which is not always fail proof but still good. I look at the car to see if the paint matches on all body panels. If one is a little different colored or faded, you know it has had some type body work. I also look under the hood to see if there is lots of dirt and oil on the engine block. If there is you can tell it has not been well maitained.
